Reinkenstraat
The Reinkenstraat is also quite popular among the expat community. The recently redecorated butcher’s shop L’Oude Ambacht offers delicious Italian take-away pastas, sausages and cheese. Just across the street, you will fi nd the Haags Wijnhuis (Hague Wine House). The owner, Gerard, is a connoisseur of the best wines from across the world. If you have never tried a traditional Dutch raw herring with onions before, ask the fi sh dealer half way down the street to prepare one specially for you. He and his wife have been running this place for years and are well-known in the area. Augustus is ideal for coffee and cake, no matter what time of day. Delicious but affordable lunches and dinners are served here as well, by friendly staff who make you feel instantly at home. If you are looking for a child-friendly establishment, try Ziani restaurant further down the road. Children love it here. Global The Hague Magazine can be bought at De Jongens bookstore. De Jongens (The Boys) sells a wide variety of popular magazines. This store has the added convenience of a little post offi ce in the back. Eric optician, undoubtedly the most sympathetic entrepreneur in the Reinkenstraat, makes sure your eyes don’t miss out on anything the beautiful city of The Hague has to offer.
Just round the corner of the Reinkenstraat is the Sweelinckplein. If you walk round this square, you will see that not much has changed since the nineteen hundreds. A famous Dutch movie on World War II called Zwartboek was partly recorded here. So if you have some time to spare, visit the Reinkenstraat. It’s worth it.
