PLEIN -The Square Of William 1, Prince Of Orange
This historic place has many faces. On one side, the entrance to the House Of Representatives and on the left the chique club, the Witte, where you may only enter through personal invitation. Should you forget your tie, then a spare one from days gone by will always be available in the vestibule. The other half of the Plein is completely taken up with restaurants and cafes. Each one is magnificent. One stylish, the other really trendy. Informal, attractive and relaxed. It's as though interior designers have held a competion here. The choice is enormous and the people are totally different in each one. Young and old, business-like or political. Everything mingles here in a relaxed atmosphere. During the day, you may end up at an outside cafe sitting next to our Prime Minister, who has just called in for a cheese roll and a glass of milk with a few collegue Ministers. It's typically Dutch! Nobody takes any notice. Next moment, a demonstration might suddenly pass by: there's so much happening here. It seems as though William 1, Prince of Orange, Father of the Nation and immortalised in the large statue in the middle of the Plein, keeps the peace and, as a goof familiy man, watches over the Plein. People from The Hague love him too. He's well cared for and is often given a hat as protection against the cold during the winter months. And then, when the evening comes it is ....
