Tribute to cities in the golden age in the MAURITSHUIS

Cityscapes of the Golden Age, at the Mauritshuis shows the most beautiful ‘portraits’ of Dutch cities in the seventeenth century.

The seventeenth century was a Golden Age for the Netherlands. Trade, arts and science flourished and occupied a top position internationally. The population grew and urbanization increased. Urban planning, is thus not only something from the last century. Even then new streets, squares and canals were developed. Citizens were proud of their city and painters took advantage of this. In this way, a new genre in painting was born: the cityscape.

Artistic city trip
With the exhibition Pride of Place: Dutch Cityscapes of the Golden Age, the Mauritshuis presents an ode to the cities of the Golden Age. The Province of Holland, that covers a large part of the West of the current Netherlands, was the most urbanized area. Cities such as Amsterdam, Delft and Haarlem were frequently portrayed by painters such as Jan van der Heyden and
Gerrit Berckheyde, the most well-known practitioner of this genre. Landscape painters, such as Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen and Aelbert Cuyp also made cityscapes. The brilliant focal point of this exposition is Johannes Vermeer’s View of Delft. This painting belongs to the Mauritshuis’s permanent collection and was the showpiece of the large Vermeer Exhibition in 1996 in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The Mauritshuis is now again working with this renowned museum for this cityscape exhibition. This exhibition offers the possibility of seeing characteristic historical places in different cities during a guided tour. This artistic city trip will certainly appeal to the visitor.

De Uithof

Of all sports, skating is perhaps the most Dutch. At one time, it could only take place outside after a hard frost, but in the Uithof sports centre, you can enjoy ice and snow the whole year round. Professional teams and less-advanced skating-enthusiasts practise on the 400 metre long ice-skating rink. Never tried skating? Then book a lesson to experience what fun ice-skating can be. The complex also has a carting track and a health club, and a ski run with real snow, maintained at a temperature of around -5 degrees Celsius. Both skiers and snowboarders zoom down the 211 metre ski slope. And afterwards, just like a skiing holiday, you can enjoy the après-ski in the attractive Grand Café.
